VoIP: Lowering Costs

By Jonathan L. Acker | June 23, 2010

Many people have seen VoIP online, but have no idea what it means or how it is used. There are a number of major companies who use the technology to stay in contact with people working off-site, largely due to how they are able to save money with VoIP.

It seems there is an acronym for everything, and VoIP is yet another. It stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, which essentially means transmitting voice over the Internet. Many of the instant messaging services we have used for years, now offer voice-chat as well as text, and much of this is because the slow connections of yesteryear are being replaced by higher-speed connections that are far more capable.

As higher-speed connections to the Internet have expanded to include more people, the ability to send voice (or even live images) over the Internet has been unlocked. VoIP makes this possible. Many of the old instant messaging programs that have been around for years, have added the ability to actually talk to other users of their program. It is only slightly more complicated than making a traditional phone call, and in most cases — free!

Large companies use VoIP services to stay in touch with remote employees (contractors, inspectors, etc.), partly due to the large number of features that are available. Many services have numerous features that allow not only voice-communication, but collaboration as well. A “whiteboard” is a collaboration area where conversation participants may post documents, drawings, or whatever they need to discuss.

Most VoIP services are free to call other users of the service, and some will even allow you to call a “landline” telephone (usually for a fee). Some services offer full encryption of the communication, protecting your communication from eavesdropping. Since the Internet is generally free (aside from a monthly Internet service charge), companies and individuals can save money using VoIP services.

Many people are starting to use VoIP services to stay in touch with distant friends and relatives. The technology is available now to save money with VoIP.
