Why Pay For Long Distance Phone Calls?

By Manuel Vintagoli | January 9, 2010

Internet communication has allows people to cross many boundaries and get in touch in ways that could never be dreamed of years ago. People are constantly on social networking sites, on Instant Messenger, and now you can Skype. Skype phone calls have made it so you can essentially call someone on the phone but see them face-to-face by using the internet and a web camera with a microphone.

Skype is important because it is new technology that is free. Usually something this forward is too expensive for mass use. But with Skype, you can talk globally for free. I have often made phone calls to a friend in grad school in Scotland. We were able to talk for hours without worrying about the cost. A single phone call probably would have cost more than the web cam I bought.

It’s a free program available to download on just about any computer. It helps, of course, if your computer is more up-to-date and you have a good internet connection. Some computers have built-in cameras and microphones. For others, you need to buy a camera. Make sure if you pick one up, it has a microphone in it! These are easy to find and cheap.

Skype gives you a lot of options. You can use it for a simple instant messenger service and just type to people. If you’re not looking your best, you can use it as just a phone and talk to someone and not worry about having a long-distance bill. You can message people when they’re offline so they’ll get your text when they next log in. And you can have the very lovely option of a video chat.

Skype is user-friendly and has few bells and whistles. You can clearly tell when members of your friends list are on or off line. When you are called, a ring tone sounds from your computer and you’re alerted with a message. You then can ignore or answer the call.

It is just as private as normal phones. Some people are wary of the internet and being connected to strangers. But you make a profile with Skype with a screen name. You include personal details, but they can only be seen by people you accept to your friends list. You can get calls from anyone, as with normal phones, but you have the option to block them from contacting you–a privilege you don’t have with a normal phone.

Skype has a few wrinkles to still even out, but it’s a near-perfect system. Calls are occasionally dropped, but this is a problem with all phone calls. Cameras can freeze the images, which is a pain, but they often sort themselves out. You often need to do some planning to organize Skype calls. They are not impromptu like telephone calls. There can be technological problems, but Skype has a really good user’s guide.

Skype is the beginning for most video calls; there will one day be this application for all cell phones. It is not a perfect system, but it is very convenient and cost-efficient. Skype is an excellent stepping stone for future communications.

Call from any PC by using skype phones. A wonderful way to stay in touch with those people you love. Use the skype phone, it’s very easy and simple to do. Find out more online now!
